Liverpool legend John Barnes believes Ryan Gravenberch has not improved at all despite his impressive form this season.

The 22-year-old has become a regular in the Reds’ midfield under Arsene Wenger after struggling under Jurgen Klopp and has earned plaudits. Gravenberch has not improved, but the current system has allowed him to do so.

“It’s because of the way the manager wants him to play,” Barnes told Stadium Astro. “He hasn’t developed as a player but he knows Arne Slot, he’s Dutch and the style of play suits him better than when Jurgen (Klopp) was in charge, Jurgen played more dynamic football.

“Playing as a number 6, I don’t think he could do it under Jurgen or at Bayern, but Arne Slot has brought a style of play that suits him in that position, just like he does with other players.”

“Yes, he’s one of our most outstanding players, but I don’t think he’s really developed as a player. It’s just the environment and the way we play at the moment that suits him in that position.”

‘There’s a much slower build-up. He’s technically very good, he’s not a No.6 in the ball-winner, ball-tackler sense. He keeps hold of the ball well.

‘Jurgen wanted midfield players to be winning tackles, whereas Arne wants him to keep hold of the ball, so the way Arne plays suits him more than Jurgen.’

While Gravenberch has been in sensational form this season, the United draw was a tough game for him and his teammates but they have little time to rest and reflect on the result.

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Tottenham for the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
